يأتي هذا الكتاب ليكون عونا للمسنين لتبصيرهم بأن ما يطرأ عليهم من تغيرات هو ظاهرة عادية، وعليهم تقبل هذه التغيرات، وإدراكها إيجابيا، والتعامل معها دون خوف أو قلق فذالك من شأنه أن يحقق لهم الهدوء والارتياح والرضا ولا يستطيع الكبار تحقيق ذلك دون مساعدة الأسرة والمجتمع، فالأسرة هي الملاذ الذي يلوذ به المسن عندما يشعر بصعوبات الحياة وشعوره أنه بين أفراد أسرته التي ترعاه وتعتني به وتحترمه، يخلق لديه قدرا كبيرا من الشعور والطمانينة، ويحفظ له هويته واعتزازه بنفسة وكرامته. وبالمقابل فإن أساليب الإهمال والرفض تعد مصادر رئيسية للقلق والشعور بعدم الأمن الذي يؤدي بدوره إلى أشكال مختلفة من الاضطراب النفسي.
