تناول الكتاب حيث أنقسم العرب في جاهليتهم - في مكة وفي الجزيرة عموماً الآن جرى الحديث عن ديانه مكة، وعن ديانة الجاهلية، مع تجاهل شبه تام للطوائف الثلاث أو، في أفضل الحالات، مع مسها عرضا، فلا أحد من العرب المعاصرين، أو من غيرهم من الأجانب، انطلق من هذا الإنقسام الديني لكي يدرس هذه الديانة، لم يرفضه أحد بالطبع، لكن لم يأخذه أحد مأخذ الجد، وبمعنى ما، فقد بدأ وكأن هذا الإنقسام بلا تأثير على معرفتنا بديانة العرب قبل الإسلام، إذ ظل الباحثون يتحدثون عن هبل والعزى، وعن اللات ومناة وذي الخلصة وغيرها من الآلهة من دون أن يكون لكل هذا أي علاقة بالحمس والطلس والحلة، أي كأن هذه المذاهب لا علاقة لها بآلهة العرب، رغم أنها مذاهب دينية بلا جدال.
