يتناول هذا الكتاب دراسة التعاليم الإدريسية دراسة تاريخية، ويتناول أصولها وتطورها وكيفية دخولها السودان، بالإضافة إلى دراسة أثرها على الطرق الصوفية في السودان بوجه عام، ومعنى التعاليم الإدريسية هي تلك التعاليم التي ألفها السيد أحمد بن إدريس لتلامذته وأتباع مدرسته الصوفية الفكرية، كما يتناول الكتاب بشيء من الإيجاز حركة التجديد الصوفي التي شهدها العالم الإسلامي في آخريات القرن الثامن عشر ومطلع القرن التاسع عشر.
