هذا الكتاب دراسة للمعالم الرئيسية للحركة الوطنية في تطورها منذ 1882 إلى يومنا هذا (1956)، ولنا منهج واضح في هذه الكتاب منهج علمي قوامه أن تاريخ التطور الاجتماعي هو أولا وقبل كل شيء وتاريخ الشعوب وإن التاريخ لا يمكن أن يكون علما حقا إذا قصر نفسه على دراسة أعمال الملوك وقواد الجيوش وأخبار الغزاة وتفاصيل المفاوضات والمعاهدات إن للزعماء والقادة دورهم في التاريخ ولكنهم لا يستطيعون أن يلعبوا هذا الدور إلا بمقدار ما يمثلون قوة متقدمة قد تهيأ له.
