يعالج هذا الكتاب موضوعا سبق أن عالجت بعض عناصره في ثلاثة كتب هي \"معارك فكرية\" و\"الوعي والوعي الزائف في الفكر العربي المعاصر\" و\"مفاهيم وقضايا إشكالية\" إلا أن تلك المعالجة السابقة كان يغلب عليها الطابع النظري، مع استثناءات تطبيقية قليلة وموضوع هذا الكتاب كما هو واضح في عنوانه هو التراث في تجليه في مواقف نقدية مختلفة منه، ولهذا يعد هذا الكتاب موقفا نقديا كذلك يضاف إلى هذه المواقف النقدية بدراسته لها ويعرض الكتاب لمواقف نقدية من التراث لمفكرين محدثين مثل عبد الله النديم وطه حسين، وعبد الرحمن بدوي، وزكي نجيب محمود، ومحمد عابد الجابري وحسن حنفي، ونصر حامد أبو زيد، إلى جانب مفكرين قدامى مثل التوحيدي وابن طفيل وابن رشد، ويفتقد هذا الكتاب بالدراسة مثل الألوسي وعزيز العظمة، وطيب تيزيني وصادق جلال العظم ومحمد أركون ومحمود إسماعيل وأبو علي ياسين، وسيد القمني، وجابر عصفور وغيرهم.
