يتناول موضوع هذا الكتاب الفترة من حياة محمد حسنين هيكل، الممتدة من سنة 1952 إلى سنة 1981، وهي الفترة التي كان فيها صحفيا وسياسيا في نفس الوقت، ويعود التفوق الذي تميز به هيكل والنجاح المهني الذي وصل إليه في مجال تخصصه، يعود أساسا إلى فهمه لطبيعة العلاقة بين السياسة والإعلام في بلده وبلدان العالم الثالث، لقد انتبه مبكرا إلى طبيعة هذه العلاقة عندما قال : \"إننا ننسى أحيانا أن الصحافة في أي بلد جزء لا يتجزأ من الحياة السياسية فيه، كما أن الحياة السياسية في أي بلد جزء لا يتجزأ من الصحافة فيه ؛ كما أن الحياة السياسية في أي بلد هي بدورها تعبير عن واقع اقتصادي واجتماعي هو الأساس في كل شيء\"
