يشكل هذا الكتاب قراءة ألبيرتو كونتي للسيرة الأدبية لشاعر إسبانيا الأكثر شهرة بابلو نيرودا. يبدأ الكتاب بالبحث عن العوامل التي ساهمت في شعبية نيرودا المذهلة. يقول المؤلف: \"ليس ثمة شك لأن بؤس أعدائه فقط، هو الذي يطرح للنقاش أمرا كهذا في أنه لا بد من البحث عن السبب الأول والأخير لشعبيته، في طبيعة شعره حتما. وتبقى مهمة هذا الكتاب – بعد مراجعة سريعة لشاعرية نيرودا ومآثره الشخصية – محاولة لتحليل تلك الطبيعة العميقة، والعناصر الأساسية التي حركها الشاعر للوصول إلى هذه الطبيعة، والوصول في الوقت نفسه، إلى هذا الجمهور العالمي الواسع المتحمس. يضم الكتاب ترجمات لعدد من قصائد نيرودا من خلال عرض تاريخي لزمن صدورها وتبدأ بـ \"كأس الدم (1904-1920)\"، \"رامي المقلاع المتحمس (1921-1926)\"، \"إقامة في الأرض (1925-1935)\"، \"إسبانيا في القلب (1934-1939)\" (...) وعناوين أخرى ذات صلة.
