في عام 1656، حرمت الجالية اليهودية في أمستردام باروخ سبينوزا كنسيا، وفي سن الثالثة والعشرين، أصبح أشهر مهرطق في اليهودية. كان قد بدأ بالفعل في تحد علماني للدين سيكون راديكاليا كما كان أصليا. واصل إنتاج واحد من أكثر الأنظمة طموحا في تاريخ الفلسفة الغربية، لذلك قبل عصره، يعد العلماء اليوم، من منظري الأوتار إلى علماء الأحياء العصبية، أنفسهم من بين ذرية سبينوزا. في خيانة سبينوزا، تنطلق ريبيكا غولدشتاين لإعادة اكتشاف رجل اللحم والدم المختبئ غالبا تحت قشرة العقلانية الصارمة، وكسر لغز الخرق بين الفيلسوف وماضيه اليهودي. يجادل جولدشتاين بأن صدمة اضطهاد محاكم التفتيش للمتحولين اليهود القسريين تلعب نفسها في فلسفة سبينوزا. سبينوزا المطرود كنسيا، ليس أقل من المطرودين له، كان يستجيب لتجربة أوروبا الأولى مع معاداة السامية العرقية.
