يقدم هذا الكتاب الموضوع علمي ليس بالجديد في ميدان علوم الأحياء وهو الفيزيولوجيا أو علم وظائف الأعضاء لكن الاهتمام بهذا العلم قد عاد قوية في السنوات العشر الأخيرة من القرن الماضي ويشهد على ذلك الفائزون بجوائز نوبل في الأعوام المذكورة وعلم وظائف الأعضاء من الموضوعات الأساسية التي تقدم للطالب في السنة الأولى تخصص معلم الصف حيث يدرس الطالب فيه كيفية عمل الأجهزة الحيوية وسيرورة الحياة فيها. وقد رأى المؤلفون أن يقدموا في كتابهم هذا مرجعا علميا للطالب يمكن أن يدرسه كما يمكن له أن يستفيد منه كمرجع متخصص في حياته العملية واعتمد المؤلفون على تقديم الحقائق والمفاهيم العلمية وشرحها بتبسيط ما أمكن ذلك معتمدين على ذكر المصطلح الأجنبي حتى يتمكن الطالب المهتم من متابعة التعلم عنه في المصادر المختلفة. كما حاول المؤلفون الإيجاز ما وسعهم ذلك حتى لا يغرق الطالب في تفاصيل قد لا تهمه كثيرا في هذه المرحلة.
