يهدف هذا الكتاب إذا، مثله مثل کتبي الأخيرة، إلى إغناء لغة اليسار وإلى تحدي لغة اليمين. وربما يعود هذا جزئيا إلى أنني أعيش في بلاد اعتادت علی تعليم السياسة والميتافيزيقيا معا في جامعاتها القومية، ولم یکن غريبا فيها أن يمتلك الحلاقون وسائقو الباصات معرفة عابرة بأفكار القانون الطبيعي أو بنظريات الحرب العادلة. من الممكن ألا تبدو سلسلة النسب التي أتعقبها لتفسير ظاهرة الإرهاب، بدءا من الشعائر القديمة مرورا بعلم اللاهوت القروسطي إلى «السامي» في القرن الثامن عشر وانتهاء باللاشعور الفرويدي، اعتباطية فحسب بل وغير تاريخية بنحو ظاهر. فهي اعتباطية لأنها لا تمثل، بالطبع، التاريخ الوحيد السابق للظاهرة التي يجري توصيفها ؛ وهي غير تاريخية، كما أعتقد، في سياق فهم خاص ومحدد للتاريخي.
