«ربما يكون أدق وصف لهذا الكتاب هو صعود الدولة المدنية وأنحسارها. فالجزء الأول منه مكرس لبيان خطى التقدم التدريجي لخروج مجتمعنا من ظلام العصور الوسطى إلى أنوار الحداثة والحرية. وحاول الكتاب أن يبين الأدوار التي لعبها المثقفون لإحداث هذه النقلة التاريخية على امتداد قرن ونصف القرن من الزمان تقريبا. أما الفصول الأخيرة من الكتاب فتعرض خطى التراجع التدريجي والمنظم لمشروع النهضة ذاك، بغية العودة من جديد إلى المنظومة الفكرية للدولة العثمانية التي يتغزل بها الآن الكثيرون على غير علم، رغم أنها قد أشفت بمصر على الهلاك كما يبين هذا الكتاب»
