تأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب من كونه يحتوي على النص الحرفي لوثائق تنشر للمرة الأولى في العالم عن أحداث الخليج العربي منذ اليوم الأول لإعلان بريطانيا عزمها على الانسحاب من الخليج إلى اليوم الأول من الاستقلال. وهذه الوثائق هي بتواقيع الحكام ونوابهم ووزرائهم وتشمل محاضر جلسات المجلس الأعلى للحكام، وجلسات المجلس الاتحادي المؤقت، وكافة القرارات الاتحادية التي صدرت، والرسائل المتبادلة بين الحكام، والوسطاء الخليجيين والزعماء العرب، والتقارير البريطانية السرية والاتفاقيات التي أقرت. ورياض نجيب الريس الذي رافق كصحافي متخصص هذه المفاوضات عن قرب وغطى لسنوات كل اجتماع من هذه الاجتماعات، استطاع أن يحصل بنفسه على نسخة حرفية من هذه المحاضر والوثائق، غير المتوفر في أي مرجع غير هذا الكتاب.
