قبل اكتشاف النفط بمئات السنين كان الخليج العربي جسر الحضارات بين الشرق والغرب وشهدت المنطقة منذ بداية العصور الحديثة صراعات ومنافسات حادة بين الدول الاستعمارية للسيطرة على موقعة الجيوستراتيجي الهام، ومنذ بداية القرن التاسع عشر خضعت المنطقة للنفوذ البريطاني، هذا الكتاب يناقش المنافسات الدولية الفرنسية والروسية والألمانية والعثمانية للأفضلية البريطانية خلال الفترة 1890-1914 وقد اعتمد على وثائق مؤسسة السجلات البريطانية ومكتبة الهند والأوراق الخاصة للمسؤولين البريطانيين في تلك الفترة.
