Overview
صاحب هذا الديوان هو كعب من ربيعة بن رباح، عرف والده بزهير بن أبي سلمى، وهو من كبار شعراء الجاهلية. ولد كعب في الجاهلية ونشأ في بيئة أبرز ما تفخر به هو الشعر، فأبوه زهير وجده أبي سلمى وعمتاه سلمى والخنساء. قال كعب الشعر وهو صغير، ولكن أباه كان يزجره عنه ويضربه مخافة أن تكون شاعريته لم تكتمل بعد، فيروي من الأشعار مالا خير فيه، ورغم ذلك لم يرتدع كعب، ما أغضب والده فأردفه على ناقته وانطلق به، وأخذ يقول البيت ويطلب من ابنه أن يجيزه، حتى وثق من استحكام ملكة الشعر عنده، فأذن له بقوله وذكر ابن قتيبة في كتابه الشعر والشعراء : قيل لخلف الأحمد : زهير أشعر أم ابنه كعب ؟ قال : لولا أبيات لزهير أكبرها الناس لقلت : إن كعبا أشعر منه.
