ابن حوقل هو علم من أعلام الجغرافيا العربية تحمل مادة كتابه (صورة الأرض) أصالة ناتجة عن سعة أسفاره في أقاليم الدولة الإسلامية ما يزيد على ثلاثين عاما أما أهميته في الفكر الجغرافي فتتجلى بكثرة النصوص التي اعتمدها الجغرافيون والكتاب الذين جاءوا بعده وفضلا عما تركه من وصف لمختلف أنشطة الحياة فى أقاليم الدولة الإسلامية وإن القيام بالكشف عن أحد الجغرافيين العرب الذين لم يهتم بهم الاهتمام المطلوب ضرورة لا بد من القيام بها، فضلا عن تقديم صورة نأمل أن تكون واضحة لما ذكره ابن حوقل عن المناحى الإدارية والاجتماعية والدينية والاقتصادية والمدنية للأقاليم الإسلامية في القرن الرابع الهجرى / العاشر الميلادى.
