يقدم كتاب (رؤى من الخارج : طروحات تاريخية ومعاصرة للمملكة العربية السعودية) سيرة بصرية لزيارات محدودة قامت بها نخب من شعوب أخرى لشبه الجزيرة العربية، كما يقدم جوانب تاريخية وأنثروبولوجية وجمالية، وذلك عبر 10 فصول متنوعة في المحتوى. وبالإضافة إلى ذلك يعرض الكتاب حكايات غير مألوفة، مثل حكاية الإيطالي لودوفيكو دي فارثنا من بولونيا الذي لم يتردد في أن يصبح مملوكا في عام 1503 م من أجل أن تطأ قدمه الأرض العربية، وحكاية ضابط البحرية البريطاني والكاتب ريتشارد بيرتون الذي اتخذ هوية طبيب وساحر أفغاني للغاية نفسها في عام 1853 م.
