في هذا الكتاب درج بعض الدارسين على دراسة الشعر دراسة تاريخية وصفية، فإن نهجنا نهجا مغايرا، نقف عند النص الشعري نتأمله وندرسه دراسة تحليلية معيارية لإظهار ما في الشعر من خصائص فكرية وفنية، وهنا كانت الصعوبة في هذه الدراسة فلست مغاليا إذا قلت أنني لم أفد كثيرا من الدراسات التي سبقتني في هذه الحقبة، لأن تلك الدراسات ركزت على السرد التاريخي وجمع الأشعار ودراستها دراسة وصفية تحليلية حتى غدا الشعر في النهاية إحدى الوثائق التي يستعان بها في دراسة التاريخ والاجتماع والسياسة، وليس هدفي من ذكر هذا الأمر التقليل من تلك الدراسات-معاذ الله- ولكن ما أريد قوله هو أن دراسة الجانب الفكري ومزجه بالجانب الفني لم يلق العناية التي لقيها الجانب التاريخي والموضوعي.
