زوربا ليس فيلسوفا، ولا حكيما، إنه رجل أحمق، أو مجنون، ممتلئ بالحياة فقط، لا يضع لنفسه حدودا ولا يكف عن ما يشتهي ويحب. في حين أن الراوي يحاول أن يكون فيلسوفا من خلال قراءة الكتب والعزلة عن الواقع. فكانت النتيجة أن الراوي يثير التساؤلات -مثل أي قارئ- ويعبر في حيرته، وزوربا يجيب بثقة تامة مدعيا أنه يفهم الحياة من خلال عيشه إياها دون قيد. على الرغم من كل ما أخذ ضد زوربا، إلا أن له قبولا وحبا لأنه مضحك ومجنون -بالمعنى الحسن للكلمة-، فلو لم تعرف عمره لافترضت أنه شاب بعيد عن الشيب، طائش، متلاعب بالكلمات إذا دعته غريزته، خاشع إذا رأى الموت مع أنه لا يخافه. ضحكت على زوربا، وأشفقت عليه.
