يعد عثتر من أهم لآلهة في جنوب الجزيرة العربية قبل الإسلام، كونه الإله الخاص بحماية المنشآت العامة والزراعية على وجه الخصوص وقد انتشرت عبادة هذا الإله في مناطق اليمن القديم كافة منذ زمن مبكر يعود إلى مطلع الألف الأول قبل الميلاد، واستمرت حتى القرن الرابع الميلادي، إذا هجر السكان عبادته ومعابده مع غيره من الآلهة القديمة.
