يقدم لنا هذا الكتاب تطور مفهوم الطليعة في الفن والأدب حيث ظهرت بواكير تصنيفاته الثقافية في الفنون الجميلة التي لعبت دورا مهما في صياغة معانيه، وساعدت على إحكام سيطرته على التقييم النقدي أو التاريخي لأساطين الفن لأكثر من مائة عام. وباختصار، كان الفن الحديث دوما، وما زال، صنيع الطليعة أو مقولاتها. وقد اتسع هذا المفهوم والتقييم شيئا فشيئا حتى شمل سائر الفنون، ومن بينها الرسم، والأدب، والموسيقى، والمسرح، والهندسة، والسينما، والتصوير، التي تبدو جميعا مقيمة وفق شروط مماثلة. أضف إلى ذلك، أن مضامين التحديث في هذا المجال من الفنون التي تحملها عبارة «الطليعة» ارتبطت عادة بنوعية الراديكالية والسياسية في هذا النقد. لذلك يقال إن الفنون الطليعية والسياسة الراديكالية، وبالأخص اليسارية منها، غالبا ما يفترض أنها وثيقة الصلة فيما بينها.
