يشير الكتاب إلى أحد الحوارات المهمة مع عبد السميع، وهو على كرسي متحرك، بعدما أجرى عملية جراحية لبتر قدمه، إذ يقول فى حوار (آخر ساعة سبتمبر 1983) متحدثا عن طفولته : «طفولة أى إنسان جزء لا يتجزأ من تكوينه، خطوطها لا تفارق الإنسان طوال حياته.. نشأت في حي السيدة زينب، وكان بالقرب منا جبل بجانب طولون، نذهب إليه، نحن أطفال الحي وأطفال الأحياء الأخرى وكثيرا ما تدور المعارك بيننا هناك.. تعلمت أن الحياة معارك مستمرة، لكن يجب ألا تستغرق المعارك حياتنا». وعن دخوله عالم الصحافة يضيف : \"خلت عالم الصحافة وكان في ذهني ألا تنسى المعارك الخط الفني حتى لا يهدر جهد الإنسان ولا يحقق ما يريده، فالمعارك تأخذ جزءا من الاهتمام، لكن لا تستغرق جهده كفنان\"
