تسلط هذه الرواية الضوء على هذه التناقضات والتساؤلات والشروخ، ضمن فضاء مغلق متحرك. يعيش الشخوص الخمسة-في قمرتي قيادة الشاحنتين على نحو مباشر-تصدع قناعاتهم، وتغير مفاهيمهم، وهم منخرطون في عمل إنساني تقليدي قائم على تقديم الغذاء والدواء لمدنيين يعانون من جراء حرب، ولكن إضافة إلى عبورهم حواجز حقيقية، فهم أيضا يواجهون حدودا ذهنية أكثر أهمية. إلام يحتاج الضحايا في الحقيقة : البقاء أم النصر ؟، وما الذي يجب نجدته لديهم، الغريزة الحيوانية التي تطلب الطعام والسكن أم الشعور الإنساني الذي يطلب وسائل الكفاح حتى إن كلفهم ذلك حياتهم ؟، كي أوضح هذه المعضلات، اخترت أن أسير الشاحنتين على الأرض التي حصلت عليها حرب البوسنة، هذا الخيار سمح لي أن أحرر الكتاب مما يمكن أن يجعل القصص مرتبطة بواقع متقلقل؛ حيث التحولات المفاجئة سريعة الزوال يمكن لها أن تحجب الأسئلة الأساسية.
