يتناول الكتاب (جينوم الشعر العمودي والحر) الأسس والقواعد التي حافظت وما زالت تحافظ على ديمومة الشعر شرحا وتبسيطا، في خمسة أبواب ابتداء من المبادئ الأساسية لعلم العروض كالكتابة العروضية والتقطيع والزحافات والعلل التي تواجه الشاعر عند نظمه لقصيدته، ثم تناول شرح الأوزان الخليلية وقسمهما على بابين اعتمادا على تكرار التفعيلات في البناء الوزني للبحر الشعري، فالباب الأول للبحور المركبة أي المبنية على أكثر من تفعيلة واحدة كبحر الطويل، والثاني البحور الصافية أو المفردة أي المبنية على أساس تفعيلة واحدة مثل بحر الكامل والوافر، ثم جاء الباب الرابع ليشرح القافية والضرورات الشعرية بشيء من الإيجاز الوافي للشاعر والناقد على حد سواء، والباب الخامس والذي خصص لدراسة الشعر الحر والإلمام بكافة جوانبه من أوزان و قوافي و تغييرات أخرى في بناءه وتفصيلاته.
