في كتاب مع أبي العلاء في سجنه يحاول عميد الأدب العربي أن يناقش حياة أحد أشهر الشعراء في التاريخ العربي والإسلامي وهو أبو العلاء المعري. يناقش حسين في هذا الكتاب حياته ومحطاته حتى دخوله السجن. يرى الكاتب أن هناك تشابه بينه وبين أبو العلاء المعري من حيث أن كلاهما كفيف، ومأساة كل منهما وتشابهم. كما يرى طه حسين أن هناك تشابه بينهما في النظرة النقدية والفلسفة الوجودية. ويعرض حسين في هذا الكتاب مجموعة من التأملات والنظرات في حياة هذا الشاعر الكبير.
