في كتاب الشيخان يتحدث المؤل عن سيدنا أبو بكر الصديق صاحب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم والخليفة الأول للمسلمين وعن سيدنا عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه الخليفة الثاني للمسلمين ويروي عنهما الكثير من القصص والروايات التي وردت في فضلهم ومناقبهم، والأحداث التي حدثت في عهديهما. وكعادة طه حسين عند الحديث في التاريخ، فإنه ينقل الكثير من الروايات المكذوبة والشاذة دون أن يتثبت من صحتها، هو فقط ينظر إلى الرواية بعقله وبتحليله الشخصي، فإن وافقت هذه الرواية عقله نقلها دون النظر إلى صحتها ولا غرابتها، وهذا ما يفعله الإنسان عندما يتحدث في غير ميدانه.
