إن هذا البحث عنى بجهود الباحثين في دراسة المعجمات العربية العامة، معجمات الألفاظ ابتداء بالعين وانتهاء بتاج العروس، ومعجمات المعاني ابتداء بالغريب المصنف وانتهاء بحدائق الأدب، وذلك خلال مدة تمتد بين سنة (1973 م) وسنة (1993 م)، وقد أربي مجموع تلك الدراسات على ستين دراسة، وهي تنطوي على آراء وتوجيهات وملاحظات مهمة، وقد سعيت فيه إلى إبراز أهم ما تشتمل عليه تلك الدراسات، وشفعت ذلك بما لدي مما هو مهم أو مفيد. والبحث لا يقدم نفسه بديلا عن أي من الدراسات التي يعنى بها، وإنما يقوم منهجه على وصف تلك الدراسات، والتعريف بها، وذكر أهم نتائجها، وإبداء ما لديه من ملاحظات وآراء وتعقيبات عليها.
