لا شك أن الدوافع وراء القيام بالرحلات يختلف بين شخص وآخر فمنهم من يقوم بذلك سعي وراء المال وآخرون يسعون وراء طلب العلم بيد أن هناك أشخاصا يقومون بهذه الرحلات بدوافع أخرى تتمثل بالإصلاح والدعوة وهؤلاء رغم قلة عددهم إلا أنهم سجلوا لنا ملاحظات اتصفت بدقتها ومصداقيتها مع ما تميزت به من أمانة في الوصف والتقصي في تسجيل مشاهداتهم بمنتهى الدقة، ومن هؤلاء السيد هبة الدين الحسيني الشهرستاني الذي بدأت رحلته من بغداد حوالي عام 1912 أو 1913 وصولا إلى الهند في فترة هي من أحرج الفترات التي مر بها العالم حيث أعطى لنا وصفا للأوضاع السياسية والاقتصادية في منطقة الخليج العربي والهند.
