تحل دراسة تاريخ سورية في مختلف مراحلها وتطوراتها أهمية خاصة بين الدراسات التاريخية القديمة والحديثة والمعاصرة، كون سورية إحدى أهم دول منطقة الشرق الأوسط لما تمتاز به من موقع جغرافي هام وتاريخ في منتهى العراقة. وكون الثقل التاريخ يلعب دورا مهما في حياة الدول الحاضرة، فضلا عن كونه وعاء وعيها وحضارتها، لذا يعطيها هذا النقل بمفرداته المختلفة ميزات نسبية تفرقها عن باقي الدول. علاوة على أنه يزود شعبها بموروث عقائدي من نمط معين يسيطر على سيرورة توجهاتها، وبالتالي فإنه يترك آثاره في إدراكات صانعي القرار في هذه الدول. كما تلعب الموجهات الحضارية دورا مهما في تشكيل قرار السياسة الداخلية والخارجية. فالصورة التي يكونها الشعب عن ماضيه هي مرجعه الوحيد في مواجهة المستقبل، فذاكرة الشعوب هي المحك الحقيقي لسياساته المختلفة.
