يتحدث المؤلف في هذا الكتاب عن أسباب تقاعس المثقف السوداني في أداء واجبه الأساسي وهو العمل على تنمية مجتمعه والنهوض به كما يقول. كما ركز الكتاب على أهمية إصلاح نظام التعليم قبل كل شيء إذا أردنا تحقيق إصلاح الحال والمآل. تحدث الأستاذ عن مدى تدمير التعليم التلقيني للعقل السوداني وتقاعسه عن إعمال فكره وممارسة النظرة النقدية لكل ما هو حولنا. وفي ذلك أتحفنا الكاتب بالاستخدام الممتاز للأمثال السودانية التي تلخص علل ثقافتنا بصورة مبسطة وثاقبة. استخدم مثل “القلم ما يزيل بلم”. وأشار إليها في اجتماع كل السودانيين من الأمي إلى الجامعي وما بينهما في طريقة تناول القضايا المصيرية في النقاش. وهي عملية رص الأفكار بدون تعمق ودون التطرق للحلول.
