رواية ليل وقضبان من روايات أدب السجون. وتعتبر من الروايات الاجتماعية، التي تصف الحياة في السجون المصرية سواء للسجان أو المسجون أو السجن نفسه، وتذكر ما يتعرض له السجناء من تعذيب وذل وإهانة، وما يحدث في زنازينهم من مواقف ومفاجآت. تتحدث الرواية عن نفسية السجين. وتقدم للقارئ مفهوم الحرية، الذي يختلف من كل إنسان للآخر حسب مواطن ضعفه واحتياجه، فالسجين يرى حريته خارج أسوار السجن، والمريض يرى حريته في الشفاء من مرضه حتى لو كان داخل أسوار السجن.
