عندما تحركت الدبابات السوفيتية جنوبا لغزو أفغانستان مساء 24 ديسمبر / كانون الأول 1979 ؛ كان كاتب هذه الحروف رضيعا ومنذ تلك اللحظة وأفغانستان ساحة حرب ومكايدة بين الإمبراطوريات المتشاكسة فلم تعرف أرض الأفغان استقرارا في تاريخها الحديث إلا ما بين استقلالها عن الإنكليز 1919، وذلك المساء الشاتي الذي بيتتها فيه دبابات الجيش الأحمر، غير أن الصراع على أفغانستان أخذ منعرجا ملحميا يوم غدت سفوحها ووهادها مسرحا لأقوى قوة في التاريخ الحديث : الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية فمنذ عبرت المقاتلات الأمريكية جبال الهندوكوش مساء السابع من ديسمبر / كانون الأول 2001 عادت أفغانستان مرة أخرى لفصل آخر من فصولها مع الغزاة، يرصد هذا الكتاب رحلة المؤلف، مراسلا لقناة الجزيرة، إلى أفغانستان عقب سيطرة حركة طالبان على كابل منتصف أغسطس/2021 كما يقدم الكتاب ومضات تاريخية عن تاريخ أفغانستان مع الغزاة.
