ناجازاکی، 9 أغسطس 1945. تخطو «هیروکو» نحو شرفتها مرتدية ثوبها الكيمونو الذي يحمل رسا لثلاثة طيور : إنها في الحادية والعشرين من عمرها، وعلى وشك الزواج من «كونراد فایس»، وفي ثانية واحدة يتحول العالم إلى لون أبيض لامع، وبعد الانفجار الذي محا كل ما قد عرفته «هیروکو» في حياتها، لم يتبق لها سوى حروق على ظهرها على شكل طائر، كتذكار لا ينمحي عن العالم الذي فقدته، وبعد سنتين تسافر «هيروكو» إلى دلهي، لتقابل عائلة «كونراد»، بحثا عن بداية جديدة، فتقع في حب أحد موظفيهم، وبمرور السنين تحل منازل جديدة محل القديمة، والحروب القديمة تأخذ مکانها صراعات جديدة، ولكن ظلال التاريخ-الشخصية والسياسية-لا تزال تخیم فوق العالم المتشابك للعائلات المختلفة، بينها تنتقل من باكستان إلى نیویورك، ثم إلى أفغانستان في أعقاب الحادي عشر من سبتمبر، إنها رواية ملحمية مهمة، وعمل أدبي من طراز رفيع، قل أن يقرأ القارئ العربي مثله.
