يحاول برتراند رسل في هذا الكتاب أن يوفق بين اتجاهين مختلفين في الفلسفة المعاصرة : علم النفس وعلم الفيزياء، فعلماء النفس، الذين ينتمون إلى المدرسة السلوكية، يتبنون موقفا، يمكن وصفه بأنه مادي، من خلال المناهج المتبعة، وهم بموقفهم هذا يربطون علم النفس بالفيزيولوجيا، فيما يحاولوا علماء الفيزياء، لا سيما أينشتاين، والذين ينادون بالنسبية، جعل المادة أقل مادية، يحلل برتراند رسل أفكار هذه المدرسة وغيرها، ويذهب مذهب وليم جيمس والواقعين الأمريكيين الجدد، الذين يرون أن جوهر العالم ليس ماديا ولا فكريا، إنما هو كيان حيادي، ومن هذا الجوهر الحيادي تكون العالمان المادي والفكري.
