إن هدف هذه الدراسة استعراض الصراع الفكري والسياسي في الحزب الشيوعي العراقي في الحقبة التي أعقبت عام 1956، ومحاولة تشخیص أسبابه البعيدة والنتائج التي تمخض عنها، لقد ظهر في مجري هذا الصراع اتجاهان رئيسيان ينضوي أحدهما تحت (الاتجاه التحريفي المعاصر) المرتبط بتيار عالمي بدأ منذ ظهور خروشوف في منتصف الخمسينات، والثاني هو (الاتجاه الثوري) الذي يؤكد على الروح الثورية للماركسية-اللينينة ويطرح مسألة سلطة الدولة باعتبارها القضية الرئيسية للنضال السياسي.
