يتكون الكتاب من تسعة فصول ؛ تعرض السبعة فصول الأولى منها مشاهد الواقع السياسي التي نشأت في أحضانها الثورة المهدية، والحروب التي دارت بين عثمان دقنة والقوات البريطانية-المصرية في شرق السودان، كما تقدم وصفا حيا للمرحلة الأخيرة التي أفضت إلى نهاية الدولة المهدية على يد القوات الغازية عام 1898م. ويتطرق جاكسون في الفصلين الأخيرين لسيرة الأمير عثمان دقنة من جوانب متعددة، تشمل نشأته أولى في سواكن، وهجرته إلى بربر، ومجاهدات في عهد المهدية، وقصة اختفاءه في جبال البحر الأحمر، والقبض عليه بعدما أفشى سره الشيخ محمد علي الأمير أرو، شيخ فخر الكميلاب الهدندوة، ثم فترة سجنه في رشيد وطرة، وأخيرا وادي حلفا.
