يعرف هذا الكتاب بالمعادن وتصنيفها وسبائكها وبنيتها الذرية والبلورية وخواصها الفيزيائية والكيميائية والميكانيكية، إذ يتضمن دراسة مفصلة للبنية البلورية (الميكروية) المثالية والحقيقية للمعادن وأنواع الخلايا الأولية (أو الهياكل الشبكية) المشكلة لهذه البنية، وما هي العوامل المؤثرة في خواص هذه الهياكل الشبكية والبنية البلورية، إضافة إلى دراسة معظم السبل (أو الطرائق) الهادفة للتعرف على البنية الداخلية للمعادن وسبائكها ورقابة جودتها وتحولاتها الطورية والألوتروبية (التآصلية) أثناء تسخينها أو تبريدها، وما هي أنواع البنى التي يمكن أن تتشكل خلال هذه التحولات سواء في المعدن النقي أو في الخليطة الثنائية المؤلفة من عنصرين (معدن مع معدن آخر) أو (معدن مع عنصر غير معدني).
