الكتاب هو خلاصة بحث اشتغل عليه المؤلف عقدا من الزمان، ويصفه معتوق بقول \"هو بحث يشبه التحري عن منابع النيل الذي يطل بكامل حضوره في مصر والسودان وإثيوبيا، فيما هو ينبع من جداول صغيرة في أعالي جبال كينيا، في قلب القارة الإفريقية. وهذه الجداول الصغيرة التي يستحيل من دونها ظهور نهر العصبية الكبير، تقع في التنشئة الاجتماعية، علما أنه سرعان ما يتبين للباحث في مجال التنشئة الاجتماعية أن التسمية الأدق لهذا المفهوم هو التنشئة المعرفية، ذلك أن ما يحصل إبان هذه العملية التي تبدأ منذ ولادة الطفل الرضيع وتتابع سيرها حتى سنوات الرشد هو تلقين لطرائق تفكير وتخطيط وتنفيذ، على شكل معارف بسيطة تحدد لاحقا وعي الفرد في مجتمعه\".
