يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى قراءة الآخر انطلاقا من موقفين اثنين : أولهما : قراءته بعين القوي المسيطر الذي يطمح إلى التوسع والامتداد، إذ يتجلى ذلك فيما كتبه الجغرافيون والرحالون الأوائل عن البلدان التابعة لدار الإسلام والبلدان المتاخمة لها، أو البعيدة عنها، وهو شأن الأمم إبان نهوضها. وثانيهما : قراءة الآخر بعين المتطلع إلى الخروج من ربقة التخلف والركود، والشلل الحضاري المزمن، وهو ما عبرت عنه النصوص الوحلية المبكرة التي حاول أصحابها تتبع ملامح النهضة الأوروبية الحديثة بغية استلهامها، واقتفاء أثرها، والأخذ بالمناسب منها.
