ظهرت الحركة النسوية اليهودية في النصف الثاني من القرن الماضي في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، وكانت أسباب ظهورها تختلف عن الحركات النسوية الأخرى مثل الحركة الأمريكية التي سبقتها زمنا، فالحركة النسوية الأمريكية ظهرت تطالب بالعدالة للمرأة ومساواتها مع الرجل في الحقوق، كحق التصويت وحق التعليم وحق الملكية إلى غير ذلك، بينما كانت الحركة النسوية اليهودية قد بدأت بمطالبتها الحاخامات بإعطائها دورا في القضايا الدينية ومشاركتها فيها، مثل دورها في إدارة الكنيس وفي مشاركتها في الصلاة وحقها في أن تكون حاخامة وتؤم الصلاة، وغيرها من القضايا المتعلقة بالدين، وكذلك طالبت الحاخامات في أن يغيروا نظرتهم الدونية نحوها، حيث عوملت لقرون معاملة إنسان من الدرجة الثانية.
