يتناول الكتاب فترة تاريخية مهمة، إذ لجأت الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية إلى إتباع سياسة مركزة في التعامل مع سوريا بدءا من عام 1955، لا سيما بعدما لمست رفضا سوريا واضحا للسياسة الأمريكية في المنطقة العربية خلال فترة الرئيس الأمريكي دوايت إيزنهاور 1953-1961، مرورا بعهدي الرئيسين جون كنيدي وليندون جونسون، وتتوقف الدراسة عام 1967 وهو العام الذي بدأت فيه الحرب العربية – الإسرائيلية الثانية المعروفة بحرب حزيران أو حرب الأيام الستة.
