وصلت هذه الرواية الملحمية، النابضة بالحياة، إلى القائمة القصيرة في جائزة مان بوكر، عام (2008)، وهي الجزء الأول من «ثلاثية الأيبس»؛ تلك السفينة التي تمخر عباب المحيط الهندي قبيل وقت قصير من اندلاع حرب الأفيون الأولى في الصين. لقد جمعت الأقدار على متنها ثلـة فريدة ومتنوعة من الشخصيات الهندية والآسيوية والغربية، فثمة راجا مفلس مدان بجريمة لم يقترفها، وامرأة من طائفة عليا تضطرها الظروف إلى الهرب، وضابط ثان أمريكي محـرر يعمل على السفينة، ويتيمة فرنسية تحلم بالذهاب إلى موريشيوس، وآخرون كثر يتخففون من روابطهم العائلية القديمة على البر، ويتآخون أو يتصارعون في البحر. إن هذه الرواية المشوقة مغامرة تاريخية تجري في ثلاثينيات القرن التاسع عشر، منطلقة من حقول الخشخاش المزهرة على نهر الغانغا، مرورا بأعالي البحار وأهوالها، ووصولا إلى الشوارع الخلفية الغامضة في كانتون الصينية.
