يعطيك الكتاب الكثير عن عصر الأيوبيين لكنه لن يبخل عليك بالفاطميين قبلهم ولاشك أن عصر الأيوبيين من أهم العصور التي مرت على مصر لا من ناحية السياسة فحسب بل من الناحية الاجتماعية والثقافية والمذهبية وذلك أن مصر قبله خضعت لعصر غلب عليه الطابع الديني لمذهب الفاطميين والذي اتخذ العلم سبيلا في نشره بين المصريين وهي الحيلة التي أدركها الأيوبيون من بعدهم فأنشأوا المدارس العديدة في ربوع مصر حتى تحول المصريون إلى أهل الجماعة والسنة، وإذا كان العلم وسيلة الفاطمين والأيوبيين، فإن الشعر هنا وسيلة المؤلف ليقتحم صميم الحياة في عصر الأيوبيين، لأنه تخطى بلاط السلاطين والأمراء واختلط بالبسطاء والمهمشين، فتعددت أغراضه وموضوعاته حتى أصبح وثيقة تاريخية هي مرآة ذلك الزمان.
