تتناول أحداث القصة كالتالي \"نعم، قلت لــ «مانك» إننا كنا نحن المساجين دائمًا ريفيين جهلاء لم تتح لنا فرص كثيرة. وأن الله قد أردنا أن نعيش فى الدنيا الحرة الطليقة لنزرع أرضه ونمجده. وكل ما فى الأمر أننا كنا من قبل أغبياء جاهلين لم نعلم هذا، وأن الأغنياء لم يعلمونا الحقيقة إلا بعد فوات الأوان. وقلت له إن الحارس \"كامبرل\" هو الذى يبقينا داخل الأسوار ويمنعنا من إتمام مشيئة الله. ولكني لم أطلب منه يومًا أن يقتل. غاية ما قلت له إننا لا نستطيع أن نخرج من السجن لأنه ليس لدينا مسدس، فلو كان لأحدنا مسدس لاستطعنا أن نخرج إلى العالم الطليق ونزرع كما أراد الله. أليس هذا ما أراد؟. فأجاب «مانك»: \" نعم هذا ما أراد\".
