Butterfly Kingdom is a kingdom of frailty and silent power. Butterfly Kingdom addresses how the Arab world faces its problems: the sharp dilemmas, hidden and visible wars begun in the beginning of the twenty first century, while unprepared for them amid fierce dictatorships and vague, aimless revolutions. Only Maria chose to leave for Canada and willingly forget her homeland. Her sister Yama did not hide within herself because she loved that. Their brother Rayan did not end up a drug addict of his own free will. Their father, Zobair or Zorba, the international pharmaceutical expert, did not reach a state of deadly isolation willingly, before the drugs mafia took his life. The mother, Virgie or Virginia, did not surrender to dementia and delusions by choice. This family did not choose tragic endings and harsh destinies. This was the result of the isolation imposed by Algeria's silent war that followed civil war, where the fire never went out. It only hides in the ashes, waiting for its chance to inflict more madness. Everyone fears the other and everyone wants to take revenge for the other. The isolation of Yama via Facebook and playing jazz music, waiting for the return of her virtual boyfriend, Faust, is only a new way to hide within her broken self. But, who knows? The butterflies that never defeated in the seasons of death have a growing belief in life.
