يعد كتاب \"النفس\" لأرسطو واحدا من أهم مؤلفاته على الإطلاق ؛ فهو يمثل بالنسبة للفلسفة والعلوم الأرسطية واسطة عقد لها جميعا، فدراسات أرسطو فى علوم الحياة وعلوم الإنسان تعتمد عليه اعتمادا كبيرا ، فهو يمثل بالنسبة لعلوم الحياة ما يمثله كتاب \"الطبيعة \" فى العلوم الطبيعية فضلا عن أن نتائج دراسة أرسطو للنفس وقواها فيه لعبت الدور الأهم فى فهم طبيعة الإنسان وتميزه عن بقية الأنواع الحيوانية، كما لعبت الدور الأهم فى نظرية المعرفة الرسطية وبيان قوى الإنسان المعرفية ودور كل واحدة منها وخاصة الحواس والعقل بشقيه الاستدلالى والحدسى ، ولا يمكن إغفال الأثر الكبير لهذا الكتاب على دراسات أرسطو الأخلاقية ؛ إذ إن ملكة الأخلاق عن الإنسان ومنبع الفضيلة لديه تبدأ بتحكم القوة العاقلة وتوجيهها لقوى النفس الأخرى، فلا فضيلة لدى الإنسان إلا حينما تنمو القوة العاقلة لديه.
