يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تسليط الضوء على نشوء وانتشار الفكرة المهدية في السودان الغربي، وبخاصة في نيجيريا خلال جهاد الشيخ عثمان دان فوديو وخلفائه، وما أعقب ذلك من تأسيس الخلافة الصكتية، ودور القوى الاستعمارية الأوروبية في تقسيم القارة الإفريقية في ما بينها، وبالتالي القضاء على الخلافة والممالك والسلطنات الإسلامية في السودان الغربي، ويتناول الكتاب العلاقة بين المهدية في السودان الغربي والمهدية في السودان الشرقي (الثورة المهدية في السودان 1881-1898) ومدى تأثر الأخيرة بالأفكار القادمة من تلك المنطقة.
