إذا كان علم السموم قد نشأ في أحضان علم الطب والصيدلة، فإن علم السموم الزراعي هو النتاج الطبيعي لعملية صراع الإنسان مع الآفات التي تهاجمه وتنافسه في صحته وغذائه حيث أدى لجوء الإنسان إلى استخدام المبيدات الكيميائية بشكل واسع خاصة في الفترة التي أعقبت انتهاء الحرب العالمية الثانية وقناعة المزارعين في تلك الفترة بأن المبيدات تمثل الحل الأمثل للتخلص من جميع الآفات التي يمكن أن تهاجم مزروعاتهم وموادهم المخزونة إلا أن هذا التفاؤل سرعان ما تلاشى نتيجة ظهور مشكلة التلوث وحالات التسمم الحاد والمزمن التي بدأت تظهر أعراضها على العاملين في مجال المبيدات والمستهلكين للمواد الزراعية المعاملة بالمبيدات وظهور العديد من سلالات الآفات المقاومة للمبيدات مما دفع الباحثين والعاملين في مجال علم السموم إلى الاهتمام بموضوع الكيميائيات الزراعية واعتباره أحد مجالات اهتمام علم السموم الذي سرعان ما تطور ليصبح فرعا قائما بذاته ذلك هو علم السموم الزراعي.
