يعتبر الكتاب \"معجم الأدباء\" من ثروات التراث التي يعض عليها بالنواجذ ويغاص في لججها للانتفاع بما فيها من درر الكلم وجواهره فضلا عما بين دفتي كل جزء من أجزائه العشرين من مأثور المنظوم والمنثو، وبديع الطرائف والنوادر وروائع كلام البلغاء وعميق أقوال العلماء وما يترقرق بين هذا وذاك من ضروب البيان الناصعة وأفانين البديع الحلوة والتلوين في الأداء والإيقاع والتنويع في الصور والأخيلة والكتاب ليس مجرد تصنيف أملته وحدها حرفة الكتابة على مؤلفه ياقوت الحموي بل هو كذلك وليد ميله الجارف إلى الأدب والاستمتاع الوجداني العميق بجني قرائح الأدباء وبليغ ما فاضت به نفوسهم وأذهانهم.
