جهد المحقق في الحصول على شعر حماد مجموعا في كتاب فلم يتيسر له، رغم أنه نشر في إحدى المجلات، ثم في كتاب فلما فلم يظفر من ذلك بشيء، جمع هذه النبذة عن حياة حماد، ثم أردف ذلك بما وقعت عليه يده من أشعاره، وقد رتبها حسب الروي، مقتفيا الترتيب الألفبائي، محيلا في المصادر على الأقدم فالقديم، إلا إن كانت الأبيات يختلف عددها بين مصدر وآخر فقد جمع المصادر المتفقة من حيث العدد في كلام واحد محافظا على ترتيبها التاريخي، ثم ذكر غيرها من المصادر المتفقة في العدد أيضا، مع الإبقاء على ترتيبها الزمني، حتى يتسنى للدارس معرفة من نقل عمن. وغالبا ما كنت أثبت رواية المصدر الأقدم وأحيانا أثبت رواية المصدر الذي أتى بالمقطعة كلها، مع الإشارة إلى اختلاف الروايات في الهامش، وهو أمر قد يفيد في تتبع ما وقع من تصحيف أو تحريف في بعض الأشعار. ثم أتبع هذا المجموع ببعض الفهارس الفنية التي تساعد الوصول إلى البغية منه بيسر.
