مرض السرطان هو من الأمراض الخطيرة المزمنة بل هو أخطر الأمراض وأصعبها على الإطلاق لأنه يعوق الطفل لفترات طويلة على مدى حياته وفي ظل وجود ضعف الإمكانات والفحص والتشخيص والعلاج فإن ذلك قد يودي بحياة الطفل ولذلك يعتبر مرض السرطان من أهم الأسباب التي تؤدي إلى وفاة الأطفال حيث إن عدد الأطفال المصابين بمرض السرطان في تزايد مستمر وقد أشارت بعض الدراسات إلى أن من الآثار النفسية المرتبطة بمرض السرطان ظهور أعراض الاكتئاب عند هؤلاء الأطفال حيث أن الاكتئاب من أكثر الاضطرابات النفسية التي تظهر بعد التشخيص وقد يستمر إلى مرحلة ما بعد العلاج والشفاء والمتابعة ويظهر ذلك من خلال المزاج المتقلب جدا للمريض ورفضه للحديث عن مرضه وعن خوف.
